Facebook Ad Targeting Pro Tip
When determining your audience for targeting and it feels too big, ask yourself this exclusivity test: “are there segments of this audience who might not be interested in my business?”
For example, if you’re a gym and you target anyone who is interested in Health & Fitness, ask yourself if everyone who is interested in the broad interest of Health & Fitness would be interested in your gym.
Chances are, the answer is no.
People who are interested in health & fitness might be people who follow a certain diet, people who love sports but not really going to the gym and people who work in the health industry like doctors and nurses.
The important question to ask when determining your audiences is “What interest is only applicable to just my target market?”
So a better targeting may be “weight training” or “Lazar Angelov” if you’re targeting bodybuilders specifically.
Another example would be if you had apparel for basketball players.
It may make sense to target Lebron James because basketball players like Lebron James.
But Lebron’s popularity is far beyond his basketball career. He’s a celebrity in his own right. SO you may be reaching people who are not basketball players.
But if you target players who aren’t too famous among non-NBA fans, then your campaigns may work better. Examples would be Nikola Jokic or Giannis Antetokounmpo.
